Course Description

This course provides the right of way professional with information regarding alternate methods to resolve negotiation disputes. Participants will learn how to identify different alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods and how to recognize each method’s strengths and weaknesses. Participants will also learn how to bust through deadlock, how to save money when negotiations are not successful, and how to avoid getting involved in court proceedings.

Credentialing

  • New SR/WA: An intermediate elective course that can be applied towards the RWP certification. 
  • Industry: An intermediate course that is required for the Oil & Gas Pipeline and Transportation Industry pathways for the SR/WA designation. It can also be applied towards the Generalist pathway for the RWP certification.
  • Specialist: An intermediate elective course that can be applied towards the R/W-AMC, R/W-EC and R/W-NAC certifications.

Instructor:

Raymond O. Howd worked at the Michigan Department of Attorney General from 1985 to 2021. He is currently a Special Assistant Attorney General representing the Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority. Mr. Howd worked in the Transportation Division from 1994 through 2007 and represented MDOT in a variety of matters involving property acquisition, condemnation litigation, and environmental issues. He was involved in all of MDOT’s condemnation appeals and oversaw MDOT’s condemnation litigation. He has been the Michigan Chapter 7 committee chair on law and legislation and a frequent speaker at IRWA meetings and conferences. Mr. Howd co-chaired the CLE International Michigan conferences on Eminent Domain in 2002, 2004, and 2005. In addition, Mr. Howd has given numerous other group presentations on issues concerning environmental law, property acquisition, and condemnation law and strategy.
