President's Message

Hello Chapter 1 Members, can you feel it? Fall is here with a welcomed evening chill signaling it’s time to trade in work shorts for work sweats. And as we all know, there have been other changes over the last 18 months, some good, some bad, and some just different. Many of us are celebrating the option to trade commuting with telecommuting, using the newly found time to spend with family, friends, new hobbies, and focusing on professional development.

The Chapter is here to encourage and support professional development by continuing the free class voucher program. The Board is pleased to report that Headquarters will once again accept Chapter 1 vouchers for Headquarters sponsored courses, see voucher details and upcoming courses in the Education Chair’s update.

Other changes include California’s controversial SB-9 and SB-10 legislation that was recently signed into law by Governor Newsome. The legislation impacts are still being contemplated, but as right of way professionals it important to keep current on legislation that can change the real estate landscape. For details on SB-9 please see the newsletter article presented by Best Best and Krieger, LLP SB 9: It’s Not a Duplex Bill, It’s a Fourplex Bill!

Lastly, the Chapter is still navigating through members comfort with attending in-person events and challenges with State and County Covid19 regulations. The Chapter will host a virtual luncheon on October 21st where Joey Mendoza of Monument ROW will be discussing Right of Way and Construction interface. Also, on November 18, Maya Hamouie will be hosting an in-person happy hour, stay tuned for the time and location. For additional events please see the Calendar of Events.

The Board and I look forward to serving and representing Chapter 1 members. Please feel free to reach out to me or members of the Board with any comments or recommendations.

Sincerely,
Craig Justesen

Chapter 1 to Host the 2024 Annual Education Conference

By: David Graeler
Artin Shaverdian and I, as co-chairs of the 2024 Education Conference Bid Committee, are pleased to announce that Chapter 1 has been formally awarded the honor of hosting the 2024 Annual Education Conference in Long Beach. During a meeting we had on Friday, October 1st with International President Jake Farrell and with IRWA Director of Events Jade Meador, Artin and I learned that the International Governance Council is very excited about Long Beach serving as the host city and the Long Beach Convention Center being our venue. The 2024 Education Conference will mark the 90th Anniversary for Chapter 1 and for the IRWA, so it’s a perfect time to bring the conference home to the Los Angeles area! A formal announcement will be made by IRWA very soon, but we wanted all of Chapter 1 to hear the good news from us first! There will be a need for volunteers as the conference date approaches, so we hope that you’ll join us in the coming years to help make this a hugely successful event!

We would like to extend our congratulations to members who have recently achieved certification credentials or have begun the path toward certification. As we celebrate these accomplishments, we are reminded of the difference one person can make. In 1934, Frank C. 2021 was a year full of transition, from relocating jobs and homes, working from home full time, and even learning in a virtual platform with attendees across the nation.
