“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year for Chapter 1 has been a testament to the spirit of volunteerism and engagement. It is all our Chapter professionals who volunteer their time that will keep this organization functioning and our balance sheets healthy. As we fully leave the pandemic and jump into thisexciting time for infrastructure, it is the dedicated volunteers who are the backbone of institutional professionalism and continuing our educational mission.

The Road Repair & Accountability Act of 2017 was the largest investment in California’s transportation needs since 1994. In 2021, President Biden signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. These landmark laws are now funding continuing bridge replacement and repairs, public transportation options, and expansion of the electric vehicle charging network. The new federal policy direction and funding in the areas of climate action, wildlife connectivity, zero-emission vehicle deployment, social equity, goods movement, and multi-modal transportation are challenging and unprecedented – all priority investments that will be implemented by right-of-way professionals.

Amid this, Chapter 1 has been able to set aside $10,000 to support the International Right of Way Association’s 70th Annual International Education Conference in Long Beach. This year our Chapter 1 courses have been filling up increasingly with attendance now at healthy levels, which continues to improve our bottom line. We celebrated Chapter 1’s 90th Anniversary with a well-attended luncheon, where we all benefited from renewing old connections and new networking. Our 90th Anniversary theme will continue with an exciting history lesson about how the ideals of Chapter 1began. Chapter 1’s conference booth will be unique and engaging just like our beginning story. None of this is possible without many, many hours of volunteer time.

Given that the last few years have seen historic levels of infrastructure funding, it is clear that no one has the time, but our success is due to the heart which makes it all happen. So, thank you to all who have leaned in and will be a part of keeping our chapter going another 90 years.
