As we start this new fiscal year, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of the International Right of Way Association Local Chapter 1 for another year. This edition, I am proud to share one of my department’s projects completed in 2022.
On Friday, June 8, 2022, the City of Los Angeles celebrated the ribbon cutting of the iconic Sixth Street Viaduct, the largest and most expensive bridge project the Bureau of Engineering (BOE) has ever built in the history of Los Angeles. The bridge cost approximately $588 million and it took more than 600 people and 1,900,000 hours and seven years to complete construction.
Some of the notable features of the bridge include:
· 3,500 feet long and 100 feet wide
· 10 pairs of arches varying from 30-60 feet in height
· Arches has lighting features with changeable colors
· Built to move up to 30 inches in all directions in the event of an earthquake
· Contains Class IV protected bike lanes
· Equipped with ADA accessible ramps at multiple access points
· Accommodates pedestrians
